FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSWhen will construction begin?
In the spring of 2025, the project went out to bid, and the City awarded Berger Excavating the contract. The City will host a community meeting on Wednesday, March 18th, 2026 at the McHenry County Fairgrounds, prior to the start of road construction to provide more information about the construction phase of the project. How much will this project cost? The City is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) on this project and therefore a portion of the costs will be covered by IDOT. The City’s portion of the project totals approximately $25.1 million, primarily related to utility relocation, streetscaping, and lighting improvements. To help offset these costs, the City has received $10 million from IDOT’s 2024 Local Transportation Grant Program, $2.5 million was awarded through the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) and $3.15 million has been received in federal Community Project Funding. As a result, the City of Woodstock's remaining local share is estimated at approximately $9.5 million. The identified improvements are anticipated to save taxpayers an estimated $30 million by avoiding replacement of the Union Pacific Rail Road bridge, which would have required a temporary railroad track, acquisition of six businesses, and two more years of construction. What are roundabouts, and where will they be located? A roundabout is a circular intersection where drivers travel counterclockwise around a center island. There are no traffic signals or stop signs; instead, drivers yield at entry to traffic in the roundabout, then enter the intersection and exit at their preferred street. Roundabouts will be constructed where Route 47 intersects with Lake Street, McConnell Road, and Judd Street/Irving Avenue. |
